Intel’s new consumer flagship CPU for 2018 is the i9-9900K, an 8 core, 16 thread, unlocked 9th generation Intel core desktop processor. It is based on the third round of optimization of Intel’s 14nm Coffee Lake architecture, which in this iteration, yields more cores. This is a retort to AMD’s 8 core 16 thread Ryzen 7 processors that launched in Q2 2018, to fill the gap before Intel releases it’s 10nm Cannon Lake based CPUs in, perhaps, late 2019. In direct proportion to the increased number of cores, average multi-core benchmarks are around 33% higher on the 8 core 9900K than the previous generation 6 core 8700K. The i9-9900K has a base frequency of 3.6 GHz, ramping up to an all-core turbo boost frequency of 4.7 GHz and a single-core turbo boost speed of 5.0 GHz (the highest frequency achieved yet from this class of Intel CPU). It features 16 MB of cache, a 95W TDP and Intel UHD graphics 630. The 9900K is compatible with the new Z390 chipset from Intel, and subject to a BIOS update, is also compatible with the Z370 chipset. This premium CPU is expected to retail at $500, which compares to around $300 for the 8 core, 16 thread Ryzen 7 2700X. Although the 9900K has around a 16% effective speed advantage over the 2700X, the Ryzen 2700X offers better value for money for most users. [Oct '18 CPUPro]

The AMD Ryzen 7 1700X isn't due for release until next week but two of our users has already submitted benchmarks. Comparing the quad and single core scores from our samples shows a relative 4.3% boost on the single core score so it’s possible that turbo wasn’t fully engaged (12% turbo boost expected). These preliminary results are seriously impressive as they put Zen’s IPC between 0% and 9% below Intel’s Kaby Lake. Even in the worst case scenario these results are still impressive. Comparing Intel’s $1,000 6900K and the 1700X shows that AMD delivers comparable performance for half the price! A shake-up of the CPU market will unfold as Zen rolls out. If Ryzen CPUs can overclock to 4.6+ GHz they will likely dominate the entire market putting a very welcome end to the monotonous tick-tock of recent years. [Feb '17 CPUPro]
