Intel’s tenth generation octa-core hyperthreaded i7-10700K is currently one of the fastest high-end desktop CPUs ever made. A simple overclock yields all 16 threads running at a staggering 5.1 GHz. Gaming and desktop performance is second only to the flagship i9-10900K. Although a new (Z490) LGA1200 motherboard is required, it will remain compatible with Rocket Lake CPUs which are due later this year. The 10700K’s $400 USD price tag puts it in a similar price band to AMD’s 12-core hyperthreaded Ryzen 9 3900X, however, the 10700K’s faster cores combined with its lower memory latency, yield a 12% effective speed advantage over the 3900X. Its not worth a price performance , price does matter if performance is matched with new technology like no pci 4 support expensive cooler must buy along with unjustify Mobo price . benchmark only gives number at lowr resolution like 1080p above that like 4k or 2k all load is on GPU . So invest wisely and get best performance out of it.

This gen is gonna be powerful, but likely demanding in energy and harder to cool than Ryzen. Only if the prices are competitive will it be a good buy (especially with the new socket).

Decent if you can pick it up for around $350 at micro center, but the normal $400 asking price is a bit steep. While the 10600k is a higher value right now, the 10700k could be seen as the minimum from Intel for "future proofing" against the next generation of games that will be made for PS5/Xbox which are powered by an 8-core zen 2 chip. I don't doubt 6-core desktop chips will still play the games well, but there should be even more scaling to be had from having a few extra cores in many titles. Some will cite that last gen consoles were also 8 cores and quad cores were fine then on the desktop, but Jaguar cores had IPC comparable to Athlon 64 Windsor cores which was awful even at the time, and did not have SMT meaning a quad core i7 offered as many logical cores as the ps4/xbone did while having massively higher IPC in spite of their physical core deficit; the next gen Zen 2 cpu's will leverage competitive IPC along with SMT (8c + 16t) to the fullest extent, and it only seems logical to match that as a minimum for a gaming rig you don't plan to upgrade for at least 5 years.
