The Intel Core i5-4690K is the latest incremental upgrade to Intel's unlocked mid-range quad core family of processors. The 4690K replaces the 4670K. Comparing the 4690K and 4670K shows that little has changed. The two chips share identical architecture; in fact the only difference between them is a 100 MHz bump to both the base and turbo clocks. The 100 MHz bump translates to an insignificant 2.9% performance increase. In terms of outright performance the 4690K has an effective speed of 103 which thanks to its superb single and dual core performance, is 12% stronger than the average of the group leaders. Overall the 4690K brings nothing new to the table so owners of previous flagship i5's will gain little by upgrading but as a new purchase the 4690K is a strong contender for both power users and high end gamers. [Jul '14 CPUPro]

The AMD Phenom II X6 1100T was the last, in a long line of Phenom II X6's. The series went 1045T, 1055T, 1065T, 1075T, 1090T and finally 1100T. Each successive release was clocked slightly higher ending with the 1100T which had a base/turbo clock speed of 3.3/3.7 GHz. The X6 has six processing cores and demonstrates very good multi-core performance but it is less able to handle single and dual core workloads, which is what the majority of consumer desktop computing requires. The X6 series were good overclockers with the ability to boost stock clocks by around 20%. Comparing the 1100T to the similarly priced i5-2400 shows that Intel's mid-range Sandy Bridge processor, which was released just a month after the 1100T, was around 8% faster for single and dual core workloads but slower by a staggering 30% for multi-core workloads. [Mar '14 CPUPro]
