The i5-10400F is a six-core hyperthreaded CPU from Intel’s latest Comet Lake series of desktop processors. This 65 W CPU has single core and all core boost frequencies of 4.3 GHz and 4.0 GHz, respectively. Whilst the 10400F will require a new LGA1200 motherboard, such as the Z490, Intel have guaranteed that the next generation of Rocket Lake CPUs will also be compatible with this chipset. The 10400F is aimed at mid-tier gaming PC builds, and as such, ships with a cooler but without integrated graphics. Despite being officially launched in Q2 of 2020, at the time of writing, the 10400F is still not widely available. Compared to the similarly priced Ryzen 5 3600, the 10400F’s lower memory latency gives it the lead in gaming and effective speed benchmarks. Since the Ryzen architecture creates a gaming bottleneck, it is necessary to upgrade to a higher tier, Intel CPU for better gaming performance. On the other hand comparing the i5-10400F and the i3-10100 shows that the 10100 offers comparable gaming performance for 22% less money whilst also including integrated graphics. [Jun '20 CPUPro]

The Core i7-4960X is Intel's top of the range desktop processor which sports six physical and twelve hyper-threaded cores. The 4960X was released in 2013 but it uses an FCLGA2011 socket which is supported only by the X79 chipset and is now three years old. As a result an investment in this processor forgoes the last three years worth of platform advances which include, amongst other things, on-board USB 3.0 and additional SATA 600 MB/s ports. Comparing the 4960X and the 4930K shows that when overclocked, the 4930K is able to best the extreme 4960X at nearly half the price! Finally comparing the latest Haswell 4770K to the 4960X shows that 4770K is again able to best the 4960X, this time at a small fraction of the price. The 4960X is significantly overpriced and there is far better value available elsewhere. [Mar '14 CPUPro]
