The Core i7-4790 is the third upgrade to Intel's flagship quad core hyper-threaded CPU. This version, like its predecessor the i7-4771, gets a 100 MHz bump in stock frequency and additionally the i7-4790 also gets a 100 MHz turbo frequency bump. These improvements (~4%) are marginal and practically impossible to discern in day to day use. Looking at a benchmark comparison between the 4771 and 4790 verifies that there is little difference between the two CPUs. Although the i7-4790 isn't much of a step forward, it's still one of the best (locked) mainstream processors on the market. AMD hasn't been able to compete with Intel on single threaded performance for several years, consequently Intel have no need to push the envelope. Overclockers should wait for the 4790K which is rumoured to be released shortly. [May '14 CPUPro]

The i5-10400F is a six-core hyperthreaded CPU from Intel’s latest Comet Lake series of desktop processors. This 65 W CPU has single core and all core boost frequencies of 4.3 GHz and 4.0 GHz, respectively. Whilst the 10400F will require a new LGA1200 motherboard, such as the Z490, Intel have guaranteed that the next generation of Rocket Lake CPUs will also be compatible with this chipset. The 10400F is aimed at mid-tier gaming PC builds, and as such, ships with a cooler but without integrated graphics. Despite being officially launched in Q2 of 2020, at the time of writing, the 10400F is still not widely available. Compared to the similarly priced Ryzen 5 3600, the 10400F’s lower memory latency gives it the lead in gaming and effective speed benchmarks. Since the Ryzen architecture creates a gaming bottleneck, it is necessary to upgrade to a higher tier, Intel CPU for better gaming performance. On the other hand comparing the i5-10400F and the i3-10100 shows that the 10100 offers comparable gaming performance for 22% less money whilst also including integrated graphics. [Jun '20 CPUPro]
