Average Bench: 88.4% (167th of 1468)

Based on 746,287 user benchmarks.  Device: BFEBFBFF000906EA Model: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-8700K CPU @ 3.70GHz

The i7-8700K is Intel’s latest, top of the range, 8th generation Coffee Lake processor. Like Kaby Lake and Sky Lake before that, Coffee Lake is based on Intel’s 14nm architecture which has been slightly optimized on each iteration. Following AMD’s modus operandi, Intel has upped the cores and threads across the range of their CPUs. In previous generations, a 6-core processor would have been a high-end desk-top (HEDT) processor, however the i7-8700K is the first Intel CPU with 6 cores and 12 threads to be classified (and priced) as a mainstream consumer processor. Specifically, the i7-8700K features a base clock speed of 3.7 GHz which boosts to 4.7 GHz (4.5 GHz for the previous generation i7-7700k), 12MB of smart (L3) cache and 2 channels of DDR4 RAM. The majority of the performance improvements over the 7th generation stem from the higher core count which results in a 50% increase in multi-core speed between the i7-7700k and i7-8700k. A new motherboard will need to be factored into the budget when upgrading to the 8700K as it requires a new Intel Z370 chipset which has supposedly been designed to better deliver power to CPUs with a greater number of cores. Also available in this latest release of CPUs is the 6 core 6 thread i5-8600k which is a more rational option (around $100 cheaper) for the vast majority of users that don’t require hyper-threading. Sandy bridge owners can finally justify an upgrade but with the next iteration of AMD's Zen architecture just around the corner the CPU market will be a lot faster moving now that Intel, once again, has to compete. [Sep '17 CPUPro]

Still a kick ass CPU, little slower than 9700K whilst having two less cores, but the 8700K makes up for having more threads.—Jan '22

Great processor that still holds up well in 2022!—Jun '22

Just needs to be a little cheaper. Ryzen 1600 for instance is more than £150 cheaper, includes a cooler, cheaper motherboards and is very competitive in multithreading workloads. In gaming, it's only around 9% slower than a 7700K and I doubt a 8700K would be much better in gaming since the vast majority of games cannot effectively utilize these extra cores. Just needs to be slightly cheaper.—Sep '17

Excellent

Has to be the best desktop processor ever used, extremely fast and is overclockable making tasks even zippier. Would like to have seen more PCI lanes to accommodate MNVe storage, seems to stay within specs as far as temperature goes and still holds ground to some resource heavy tasks making it worthy to spend your money on.

Good Overclocking CPU standing test of time. Still offering gaming performance on par of I9-10900K,

Excellent

Best Gaming-CPU today, with a bit less voltage even cool enough.

Good

The i7-8700K is a powerful processor that can overclock to 5 GHz on air, and even higher if water cooled. In most games, this processor still reigns supreme, as newer titles arrive that CAN utilize all cores of the processor, such as Assassin's Creed Odyssey. With a price tag of about $350 USD, it can still be hard to recommend this processor over the non 'K' variant, which still places this processor firmly in 'enthusiast' territory, even 14 months after it's initial release. However, it is the cheapest 'enthusiast' grade consumer processor you can buy from the Intel lineup, and with 6 cores and 12 threads, can also double for moderate workstation or server use.

if anyone ever want the ultimate deal for multithread performance, you should check out the xeon 2nd hand market. I just built a dual e5-2696 v2. cost of both cpu ($580). cost of z9ped16 MB ($370). cost of 64GB DDR3 ($120). Here's the bench: http://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/5285848 obviously the single and quad core number does suck but the multithread number is even slightly better than that of 1950X. on top of that, much cheaper ddr3 ecc ram...
