Intel are celebrating the 40th anniversary of their x86 architecture and 8086 processor with the launch of their high-end i7-8086K. Just 50,000 units of this hex core, twelve threaded Coffee Lake processor have been made available globally. Exactly like the i7-8700K, the 8086K features 12MB of smart (L3) cache, 2 channels of DDR4 RAM and has a TDP of 95W. Essentially, the 8086K is Intel’s current Coffee Lake flagship, the i7-8700K, with a single-core turbo frequency factory overclocked by 300 MHz. Thermals permitting, out of the box, the i7-8086K achieves a single core boost speed of 5.0 GHz – which is a new record for Intel. That said, you would be unlucky if you were unable to achieve a 5.0 GHz single core OC with an 8700K. For everything other than single core, the turbo clock speeds on the 8086K exactly match the 8700K which puts the 8086K firmly into gimmick territory. Directly comparing the 8086K and 8700K shows that for a $100 (24%) price premium you get around a 5% performance improvement which drops to around 2% when both chips are overclocked. If the price gap between the 8086K and the 8700K were to fall to less than 20 USD it may be worth considering the 8086K. [Jun '18 CPUPro]

Bought mine for $360, It's been a great overclocker too 5Ghz at pretty low voltage BS l l V

Poor

Only had one a short while, but exceptional performance. While monitoring the speeds playing Kingdom Come I was hitting 5ghz on all six cores. And after all the negative reviews of it being no better than a 8700k, it was actually cheaper than one!

it's just a binned and overpriced 8700k

Price is marginal but 4% performance increase is a lot

Excellent

...just a RE-BRAND for 100$ more.

Excellent

The 5Ghz is only applied for 2 cores. The rest are identical to 8700k. This is just a binned 8700k with a fancy name. I love it, though.

Excellent

8700k with new name and less changes of poor overclocking, limited numbers add bit of exclusivity. Bought not for performance, but because it is a gimmick.

Love it only thing i hate offcourse is the stock intel tim

Just another attention grab from Intel!

Poor

Should have named it to the original 8080...

A slightly overclocked 8700K for 100 $ more. Just overclock a 8700K and it will perform the same with a slight overclock. Value sucks.

Poor

Pointless CPU for those who don't know how to overclock 8700k

Excellent

When it was on sale it was only a tiny bit more than the 8700K, and comes stock with higher default single core speed. Generally overclocks higher without much work too. You have to give it some props for nostalgia too. I mean 40th Anniversary of the 8086. 5+ GHz official speed. People are saying $60-$100 more than 8700K... but when I bought, it was anywhere from $20-$40 more. Which to me is worth it, to them, maybe not. To each their own, but some will pay much higher to have a guaranteed 5GHz clock speed. I can run 5.2 on all cores 24/7 so I'm happy paying extra.

Poor

Only an idiot would spend an extra $100 just for that 5% performance than an i7-8700k - said no one ever.

Good

Got it for 50 more than a 8700k goes for, it's pretty much the same thing but you know it's gonna reach 5ghz without problems at 1.3v. (overclock, not turbo boost which works only on one core) Worth the 50 bucks if you are planning to use it for the decade to come.

Excellent

Better than 9900k & 9700k upto quad core performance. Most pc application use maximum 4 core at a time.
