Intel’s Core i7-9700K is an unlocked 9th generation CPU, released alongside the i5-9600K and the i9-9900K. The 9700K is an 8 core, 8 thread processor based on the third iteration of Intel’s 14nm Coffee Lake architecture, which sees an increase in the number of cores available to mainstream consumers, in line with AMD’s Ryzen 7 offerings. The 9700K features 12 MB of cache, a 95W TDP and Intel UHD graphics 630. And like the other 9th generation chips, it is compatible with Intel’s new Z390 chipset as well as last years Z370 chipset (with an updated BIOS). The 9700K has a base frequency of 3.6 GHz, rising to 4.6 GHz when all 8 cores are engaged and a single core boost frequency of 4.9 GHz (compared to 3.6 GHz, 4.7 GHz and 5.0 GHz for the flagship 9900K). This translates to similar single and quad core performance to the 9900K, but due to the higher number of threads, the 9900K has around a 50% higher multi-core benchmark than the 9700K. Currently most PC games do not engage more than 4 cores, so at $420 (15% cheaper than the 9900K), the 9700K offers better value for money to gamers. If instead, great multi-core performance is a necessity, at $290, the 8 core 16 thread Ryzen 7 2700X is a more prudent choice, with a 30% higher multi-core benchmark than the 9700K.  [Oct '18 CPUPro]

The Core i7-7700K is Intel’s flagship Kaby Lake based CPU which is reported to have the same IPC as its predecessor, Skylake. Comparing the 7700K and 6700K shows that both average effective speed and peak overclocked speed are up by 7%. Most of the increase in average effective speed is explained by the 5% boost in base clocks from 4.0 to 4.2 GHz. The improved peak lab speed is attributable to a combination of better overclocking capacity and improvements in Intel’s speedshift technology which make the 7700K slightly more responsive. Kaby Lake also has marginally better HD 630 integrated graphics. The i7-7700K is priced similarly to the i7-6700K so for top end gaming and workstation builds, the 7700K is the clear choice for 2017.
