The i7-4900MQ is a top end 2013 Haswell Laptop CPU. It sports Intel's standard i7 configuration of four physical cores with support for eight hyper-threads. Comparing the 4990MQ and the flagship desktop i7-4770 shows that the performance gap between Desktop and Laptop CPUs no longer exists amongst top end Haswell based CPUs. Looking at the 4900MQ and the 3630QM Ivy Bridge Laptop CPU shows that the 4900MQ is around 30% faster, which is a big jump considering the relatively narrow age gap between the two. Overall the 4900MQ is a superb Laptop CPU that is able to give even the latest top of the range Desktop CPUs a run for their money. [Mar '14CPUPro]
Intel's i5 12500 is a weird processor. It is around $40 more expensive than the i5 12400(F) for slightly higher clocks and a better iGPU that most gamers will not care about - which is the thing Alder Lake focuses most on from what we've seen. It is not good value. This does not mean it is a bad CPU, it is still very capable of gaming and could be more capable in workstation and desktop use thanks to the improved iGPU. I do not believe it deserves a $40 tax for those situations though. [Apr '22Waaaaaal]
