The Intel Core i7-4790K, codenamed Devil's Canyon, is an upgraded 4770K, Intel's current flagship i7. The 4790K features an improved thermal interface which enables it to dissipate heat more efficiently than the 4770K. Comparing the 4770K and 4790K shows that stock performance has improved by 13% which is consistent with the base clock jump from 3.5 GHz to 4.0 GHz. OC performance remains unchanged. Comparing the 4790K and 4790 shows that at stock clocks the 4790K is around 16% faster which considering the small price difference makes the 4790K a far better choice. Previously Intel targeted the unlocked K versions at overclockers but with Devil's Canyon they have included VT-d on the K chip and this time it's squarely aimed at both power users and overclockers alike. Until the release of Broadwell in six months, the 4790K is the high end CPU of choice. [Jul '14 CPUPro]

Late getting this PC; but what a beast. It shatters my i7 3770; and with a Azrock Killer board; how can you go wrong.

Top of the Line I7 processor. Looking at the FAQs for this truly amazing site. Postives: very fast, L1, L2/L3 is very adequate for a consumer chip. The cores will be idle most of the time...even on a single core processer the core is idle 99% of the time. I have read where cooling is somewhat of an issue...maybe the discussion was emphasizing overclocking. Also rumors were the processor was a re-badged 4770K and the overclocking potential from non-test cores was varied. I7-5820 or I7-4790 are definitely the Best Bang for the buck and the top contenders.—Apr '15

REVIEW FOR THE 4790* --- LOVE IT TO DEATH. I waited years for Intel to make a factory 4.0 GHZ quad-core processor, now that I have one, I LOVE IT. I gave a 9.1 and not a 10 because first, it doesn't have V Pro, which is fine sence I use it at home but on for a work environment would be a total downer, two, mine seems to cap out at 3.95 Ghz, instead of 4, but its 50 mhz in 2015 does 50 mhz even matter any more?—Jun '15

Best gaming processor for 2014,2015 and counting... With the stock cooler I run mine at 4.4 and never break 60 degrees even benchmarking. Get this thing a proper cooler and I've tested mine for a stable 4.8ghz and it worked for days. I am just not comfortable with the thermals. Deliding, water cooling can solve that. Point blank this is the best processor for gaming beyond anything Intel has ever produced. And is likely to be a strong contender for best gaming processor for years to come.—Jul '15

The best/fastest CPU you can get on 1150 socket.

Looking at the user benchmark comparisons from this site, it looks like the i7-4790k really only starts to get outclassed when compared to the 8th and 9th gen CPUs. Not sure if Intel just really hit it out of the park with the i7-4790k back in 2014, or if Intel hasn't really been innovating as much after that. i7-4790k released Q2 2014, i7-6900k released Q2 2016 +2% faster, i7-7700k released Q1 2017 +10% faster, i7-8700k released Q4 2017 +19% faster, i7-9700k released Q4 2018 +27% faster

Oustanding performance. Bought it from eBay with $180, absolute bargain. Even after 2 years still destroys 90% of cpus. Voted 9/10 just because my chip can't go over 4.7 Ghz. For a 2 year old cpu, it has my total respect.

The 4790k continues to hold up as a robust chip with plenty of overclocking potential. It's more than adequate for gaming at standard refresh rates and as a general-purpose computer CPU it will easily last for years to come. With a good overclock and an adequate cooling solution, it remains competent even in more demanding modern gaming titles. I'm convinced this is one of the chips they'll write stories about even 10 years from now thanks to its legendary and rock-solid performance. Definitely one for the CPU hall of fame.

Just picked one up on the 'bay for $145. I have it on an Arctic Freezer II 280. Overclocked to 4.8 ghz. It's ballin' no problem. I'm holding out for maybe 2 years to upgrade, we'll see. Bought it for fun and to try overclocking.
