The AMD FX-8150 is the earliest eight core variant in AMD's flagship FX series. The FX-8150 was released in October 2011 and at that time it superseded the Phenom 1100T. Comparing the 1100T and FX-8150 shows that the newer FX-8150 has roughly the same single and dual core speed but, thanks to its extra two cores, pulled ahead of its predecessor by 15% in multi-core tests. The performance improvements over the 1100T are accompanied by an improved manufacturing process which reduced lithography from 45 to 32 nanometres; consequently both processors have the same maximum TDP of 125 Watts. Thanks to its eight cores the FX-8150 has strong multi-core performance but its single-core core speeds are still relatively weak compared to similarly priced Intel chips. [Mar '14CPUPro]
In terms of raw single-core performance the flagship AMD FX-8350 is lagging behind intel's processor line-up by over two generations. The PassMark Single Thread scores for the i5-2500K vs the FX-8350 are 1863 to 1520 which shows that in terms of raw per-core processing the FX-8350 is lagging the two year old i5 by 23%. Where the AMD FX makes up is on multi-core performance, with a score of 9156 vs 6745, the AMD leads the Intel 2500K by 36% making it the far more capable multi-threaded server orientated performer. The 8350 is also cheaper but significantly more power hungry which counts strongly against it as a server proposition. The FX-8350 could be a good fit for specific server use cases but for general consumer use, which is single and dual core intensive, Intel's two year old i5-2500K delivers better performance.
