The Intel Core i5-4690K is the latest incremental upgrade to Intel's unlocked mid-range quad core family of processors. The 4690K replaces the 4670K. Comparing the 4690K and 4670K shows that little has changed. The two chips share identical architecture; in fact the only difference between them is a 100 MHz bump to both the base and turbo clocks. The 100 MHz bump translates to an insignificant 2.9% performance increase. In terms of outright performance the 4690K has an effective speed of 103 which thanks to its superb single and dual core performance, is 12% stronger than the average of the group leaders. Overall the 4690K brings nothing new to the table so owners of previous flagship i5's will gain little by upgrading but as a new purchase the 4690K is a strong contender for both power users and high end gamers. [Jul '14 CPUPro]

The 8-core, 16-thread Ryzen 7 3700X hails from the middle of AMD’s latest range of 7nm silicon Zen 2 CPUs. The $329 USD 3700X has a maximum stock boost clock of 4.4 GHz, 32 MB of L3 cache, supports 3200 MHz DDR4 memory and has a power draw of just 65W TDP. Out of the box, the 3700X, 3600X and 3600 achieve similar quad core speeds but the 16 threaded 3700X is 30% faster at multi-core computations than the 12 threaded 3600X. Comparing the 3700X to Intel’s i7-9700K shows that, when overclocked, the 3700X is 26% faster at 64-core computations but 13% slower for gaming and desktop (sub eight core performance). Unlike lower end Ryzen 3000 SKUs, the 3700X comes with a reasonable cooler but AMD should not have bothered since a $20 aftermarket cooler is quieter, easier to change, and better at cooling. With a Gammaxx 400 cooler we were able to maintain a 43.25x OC during our EFps tests. We had to use a fixed clock OC (rather than Offset/PBO) to avoid significant frame drops in Fortnite. With strong single-core scores, the 3700X should offer very strong gaming performance but in reality it is let down by its memory controller, which, although significantly improved over previous Ryzen iterations, still has limited bandwidth and high latency. The 3700X only has a small real world gaming advantage over the entry level 4-core, 4-thread Intel Core i3-9100F[Jul '19 CPUPro]
