The third gen Ivy Bridge Core i7-3770K can't really be described as a consumer orientated processor. With 8 threads and four cores its capabilities are better aligned to server use. For price insensitive consumers that want the best of the best, this is currently one of the fastest processors available. The PassMark Single Thread score of 2080 points puts the 3770K right at the top of the pack in terms of raw processing power and real world performance. The GeekBench and PassMark scores of 17210 and 9653 are within 20% or so of the best we have ever seen. Despite the near record breaking processing throughputs the 3770K is only rated at 77 TDP, which is very low by historical standards. For typical consumer use there are better value propositions out there. [May '13 CPUPro]

Still plays games well. OC to 4.2GHz on air.

By far the most powerful processor I've owned, this CPU has yet to run a program that it can't handle. The main bad point of this CPU is the fact that it can't be overclocked much with the stock cooler, and even when not overclocked some programs that utilize 100% of the cores (and their respective hyperthreads) can cause the CPU to overheat. Although this is very rare and it will take some time to overheat. —Sep '14

beast, this cpu is running on closed loop water and is rock solid at 4.7 GHz (All cores) and auto turbo's at 5.4 Ghz. It is on 24/7 and NEVER overheats. It runs absolutely everything you throw at it. Intel will have to up their game considerably more than they are doing before I see any advantage in upgrading that is worthwhile. I believe that the lack of support currently for the chipsets (only 2 to 3 years or so old) is a deliberate ploy to force EARLY upgrades of major components, My Asus board dates to mid 2013 and the latest updates for this PREMEIUM £200+ board were released in 2013 with no further updates likely. In short this board was technically OBSOLETE within a couple of months?????????—Dec '14

The i7-3770K is the best processor you can buy for LGA1155 socket. With 4 cores and 8 threads, this processor still handles gaming and streaming very well. Apart from it's great overclocking capabilities, the age of the processor is beginning to show. Since the processor was made for older motherboards, compatibility with newer technologies (such as DDR4 Memory and NVMe Solid State Drives for example) is non-existent. While this may not matter for most consumers, for those who want the best value for their money, this processor is not a good choice. However, it can be recommended if you ALREADY own a motherboard capable of overclocking that is compatible with the i7-3770K. If you don't have a motherboard that can overclock the processor, it is recommended that you buy an i7-3770 non 'K' variant, as this will mirror the performance of the 'K' variant. To summarize, there are better, more modern options available that can obtain equal, if not better, performance than the i7-3770K, while supporting newer memory and storage as well as an overall increase in performance in gaming and workstation applications.
