The Intel i5-3317U is a dual core, four thread, 3rd generation Ivy Bridge netbook and laptop processor. It launched in Q2 2012, and has since been succeeded by the i5-4200U which is a 4th generation Haswell (2013) processor. Comparing the 4200U and 3317U shows that, for 20% more money, the i5-4200U has a 10% faster effective speed and a 12% lower TDP. This is due to the newer and improved Haswell architecture. The TDP of 17 Watts should yield over 5 hours of battery life for average use. Like most mobile processors, the effective speed of 51.1 is poor, however, it's okay for handling the majority of day to day processing activities. The i5-3317U also has onboard HD Graphics 4000 which is sufficient for typical desktop use. [Nov '14 CPUPro]

MORE DETAILS

The Intel Core i5-2450M is a mid-range dual-core four threaded mobile processor based on the Sandy Bridge architecture. It was launched in Q1 2012 and is a slightly quicker version of the i5-2410M which launched a year earlier. At the time of release, the 2450M was reasonably fast with an effective speed of 61: the base clock speed is 2.5 GHz which can boost up to 3.1 GHz. The TDP of 35W is relatively high by modern standards and is halved in the i5-3317U (see full comparison). A lower TDP leads to extended battery life which is obviously a big plus for mobile processors. The i5-2450M features integrated Intel HD Graphics 3000 which isn't adequate for most modern games but it's absolutely fine for handling typical tasks such as browsing and word processing. [Nov '14 CPUPro]
